Tips for skate care during the summer break
The last competition is over, the ice rink for training has melted and your lovely figure skates have carelessly ended up somewhere in the corner? Hopefully not! Because after the end of the ice skating season, we recommend that you take good care of your skates so that they stay in good condition and are perfectly ready for the next start.
Check the laces
The laces should be checked for rips, frays or other damage. If they are visibly worn, they should be replaced to ensure support and safety when wearing your skates.
The required shoelace length can be determined by completely unthreading and measuring the shoelace.
Inspect the insoles
The insoles should be removed, cleaned thoroughly and dried completely. If they are badly used or worn out, it makes sense to replace them - for more comfort and hygiene. Besides the manufacturer's original insoles, there are also comfortable insoles with additional cushioning.
Clean the upper material and check for damage
The upper material of your figure skates should be cleaned with a cloth and checked for scratches or cracks. Minor damage can be repaired with the appropriate paint.
Check skate tape
If skate tape has been used, it should also be checked for damage or detachment. If necessary, it should be replaced in order to continue to provide good protection.
Control the blades
The blades should be checked for signs of damage. If re-sharpening is necessary, it is advisable to have this done now so that you are ready to go at the start of the season.
It is also important to check the tightness of the mounting and, if necessary, tighten the screws by hand with a screwdriver.
Use scented or dry cushions
Finally, it is a good idea to place special scented or dry cushions (e.g. „Smell Well“) in the skates. These help to reduce moisture and prevent odours.
Proper storage
Under no circumstances should the hard plastic guards be left on the runners, as moisture can accumulate underneath and cause rust. The blades should be dried with a cloth and then placed in soft fabric guards that can absorb the moisture.
The suggested steps are easy to perform and ensure that the skates last as long as possible and that nothing stands in the way of a smooth start to the next skating season.
